Copper vs. Silver: Why We Stock Both (And Why You Should Too)

We get this question a lot: you're a precious metals shop, so why do you sell copper rounds alongside .999 fine silver? Fair question. The short answer is that copper and silver do different jobs in a collection, and the best stacks usually have room for both.

Silver is the classic precious metal — it's been used as money for thousands of years, it's in real demand from electronics and solar manufacturers, and it's recognized and tradeable pretty much anywhere on earth. When people talk about "stacking" as a way to store value, they usually mean silver. It costs more per ounce, and that cost is part of the point: it's the metal you hold onto.

Copper is a different animal. It's an industrial metal first and a collectible second, which is exactly why it's so much fun. A copper round might run you a couple of dollars instead of thirty-plus, but it gets the same careful minting, the same sharp detail, and often even wilder designs, because the low cost gives artists more room to experiment. Copper is where a lot of stackers get their start — it lets you build a real collection, learn what designs and mints you like, and get comfortable buying before you're spending serious money on silver.

That's really the case for stocking both. Copper is the low-stakes, high-fun side of collecting — great for beginners, great for gifts, great for grabbing a piece just because you love the design. Silver is the long-term, store-of-value side — the pieces you're building a stack around. A lot of our regulars do exactly that: copper for the collection, silver for the stack.
